L’apostrophe

“Le and la” become “l'” in front of words that start with a vowel or a silent ‘h’.

  • Example: We say “je vais à l’école” (I am going to school) and not “je vais à la école” because “l’école” starts with a vowel.

“De” becomes “d'” in front of words that start with a vowel or a silent ‘h’.

  • Example: We say “Il a beaucoup d’amis à Paris” (He has a lot of friends in Paris) and not “il a beaucoup de amis à Paris” because “ami” starts with a vowel.

Note: It is mandatory to use the contracted form both in spoken and written French.
